KEN DOHERTY, inset, was understandably down in the dumps yesterday after he failed to qualify for next month's Sanyuan Foods China Open.
The brochure printing popular Dubliner lost the battle of the former world champions as he was beaten 5-2 by Graeme Dott in the final qualifying round for the next ranking tournament.
And with defeat at the World Snooker Centre in Prestatyn the Irishman missed out on a potentially mouth-watering clash with Belfast potter Mark Allen at the Beijing event, which runs March 29 - April 4. "I'm disappointed because I had some decent chances in the match," reflected Doherty.
"I knew it was going to be a really tough match against Graeme, he's one of the hardest draws you could have had.

Dott was the better starter and thanks to breaks of 45, 39 and 73 edged 2-0 ahead.
But Doherty bravely rallied and hit back to level matters at 2-2 before the interval.
However, Dott kept his composure to pinch a longwinded fifth frame which dragged on for nearly 42 minutes.
And from there the 2006 Crucible champion didn't look back as he won the next two frames to make sure he was Beijing-bound.
