The lads produced a great performance last week against Newcastle United - and it was needed. We had lost the previous three games and we hadn't had a clean sheet for a number of games. Being a defender, you always pride yourself on keeping the opposition out.

Replica fendi wholesale

It was good for the whole team and it was encouraging to see us dominate the game for long periods, even when we were down to 10 men for an hour. We can take heart from that.

It is a little building block for us because we are going into a really tough month with plenty of games and plenty of points at stake.

We know we need more performances like the one we produced against Newcastle because we know how important this month could be, with the amount of points on offer.

I think it will be a barometer of where we are heading at the end of this month. If we are still where we are now, or even a place or two higher, then we can look to the possibility of the top six. But there is no point talking about that now.

We have obviously been in and around the top six for a large part of the season but it is all about the business end of the season, around March and April time.

The two new guys, Nolberto Solano and Alex Bruce, are settling in very well and I am sure they will make valuable contributions.

Nobby comes with plenty of experience from the Premier League. He is a very, very good footballer and technically he is excellent. He uses the ball very well.

Whether he comes off the bench or starts games, his use of the ball will be important for us.

He is a wide right player so I have come up against Nobby a few times during my career.

We have had some banter already. I say to him he never got past me, and he reckons he used to get past me all the time. We swapped shirts a few times and I know I am on top in terms of being on the winning team.

He is a very clever player and has shown his class already in training.

Once he is up to speed he will be invaluable for us in the runin.

His arrival hasn't taken the heat off me in terms of the younger players giving me stick because of my age. I am still five years older than him.

He does ask me how I can keep going, so perhaps I can inspire him to carry on for a few more years.

We have no worries with Nobby because the boss knows him very well from his Newcastle days.

His arrival will keep our midfielders on their toes now because they know there is someone of his calibre and ability waiting to come in.

He has joined a club that wants to do well, and he wants to progress.

That is always good.

I look at him and his motivation is to do well and help us push on.

After winning promotion last year we want to build ourselves up with a view to possibly going back to the Premier League, where we have been before and want to be again. I am sure the fans will enjoy watching him.

It was great to see Bruno Berner back in action last week after his injury.

Being a left-back, I have a soft spot for Bruno and Ryan Mc- Givern.

I thought Bruno did ever so well.

Skipper Tony Hackworth took his goal tally to 12 after netting from the spot at Nethermoor, but strikes from James Cotterill, Adam Muller and Malvin Kamara sealed victory for the Lions.

The Blues will be without striker Liam Gildea, who completes a three-match suspension, otherwise Harry Dunn's men are at full strength as they tackle United for the second time this term.

Time for a long hard look, say

BLUEBIRDS boss Dave Jones refused to talk to any written press after his side's defeat at Deepdale due to his on-going ban on Media Wales reporters.

But his words were related by the club's press officer. Jones said his players now have to take "a long hard look at themselves" after crashing to an embarrassing 3-0 defeat against a Preston side who played most of the second half with ten men.

The Bluebirds suffered after disastrous errors from defender Paul Quinn, who conceded as first-half penalty, and goalkeeper Peter Enckelman whose error cost Cardiff the third goal.

"We started well and brightly, but giving away the penalty was a piece of stupidity," said Jones.

"It was a horrible mistake and stupidity costs you.

"After they went down to 10 men we conceded, which made it an uphill struggle.

"We basically just did not deal with a free-kick.

"We kept the pressure on, but when we went and did what we did for the last one, well, that was the killer.

"I've been in the game for a long time, but I cannot legislate for what Peter has done there.

"There was a lot of stupidity and a lot of my players have to take a long, hard look at themselves. Too many of my players did not show enough commitment. Now we need to dig deep."

Meanwhile Preston boss Darren Ferguson was delighted with his side's victory and hailed his two-goal striker Jon Parkin.

"It was a big win for us. It was a fantastic team effort and needed to be against a good Cardiff side," said Ferguson.

"Jon has been spot on. He's had to wait for his chance, but he has taken it. He's a big lad, but technically he is very good too. I think he enjoyed himself out Guess Watch there."

Time for us all to show some s

THE fierce, passionate rivalries between our clubs in the North East means there is often little to unite fans.

Bickering, banter, windups and arguments are Citizen Replica usually the standard means of communication between the loyalists of Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

But there is one issue I hope will pull people together this week, and lead to messages of support and solidarity between our fans. The mothballing of the Corus plant in Redcar, ending 170 years of steel production on Teesside, will effect livelihoods, families and communities in Boro's heartlands.

It will have a knock-on effect on the club. A large proportion of the 2,000 men losing their jobs are among the core of Boro's fan base. Boro will undoubtedly be among businesses that will suffer as a huge number supporters will no longer be able to afford the pounds 20-plus to go to games.

We've seen it before. The mines and shipyards that once gave the region - and its fans - their identity are lost, along with steel.

Fake Spazio24 Football is a trivial business compared to the dole and a bleak financial future. But Boro chairman Steve Gibson has stood firm alongside the unions and workers to help drum home their message.

He has also funded many a project to help deprived areas on Teesside and ensured his club make a positive impact on the community.

Hopefully he can use the Government contacts who courted him in the early days of New Labour to ensure that if a buyer can be found, the politicians will stump up the tens of millions needed to relight the furnaces and get production going again.

Miller tipped for a POY award

Byline: Graeme Croser

rolex replica THE two frontrunners for Scotland's player of the year honours go head to head at Ibrox this afternoon with the praise of Hibs boss John Hughes ringing in their ears.

In the blue corner, Rangers' Steven Davis will be charged with making his team tick, a job he has performed with consummate effectiveness in recent weeks as he helped them build a healthy lead at the top of the table.

Wearing green will be Liam Miller, who has arguably been even more consistently impressive as the playmaker of Hughes' Hibs side which has won points and plaudits for its free-flowing football.

Hughes sees similarities in their characters -quiet young men who don't shout and bawl but lead by example.

'I think Steven Davis will be up there when it paper bag printing comes to player of the season, although he'll maybe come in second to Liam Miller,' said Hughes.

'I don't know Davis but I'd imagine he is a good guy to have at your club. You look at his work ethic and applaud him.

'You have to realise that before all the silky stuff comes the shift. If you're prepared to do that and have the ability, you're going to be a top player.

Miller happy to be part of a w

JAMIE Miller has made only three appearances for Bristol since joining from Coventry in December - but he is more than happy to have swapped a relegation scrap for a promotion battle.

The 22-year-old back-rower remains Coventry's top try-scorer this season - and was the club's skipper and star player before quitting for Bristol.

Miller will tomorrow make his first start for Paul Hull's men since leaving the Butts Park Arena amid Coventry's financial struggles.

But he has no regrets about the switch - and is desperate to force his way into the first-team reckoning at the Memorial Stadium.

"It's certainly very different to go from essentially the top of one pile to the bottom of another - but it's the better way to have it," said Miller.

"I'd rather be working my way up a ladder at what is potentially a Premiership club than being at the top rung of a ladder of a bottom Championship club.

"I'd rather be getting the sort of coaching I am here and working my way up with experienced players helping me, than being the first- team captain, top try-scorer and most experienced back-row forward at the club, aged 22.

"I'm still incredibly young for my position and have a lot to learn.

"So I'm pleased to be in an environment now where I can learn from people above me and work my way up.

"There are certainly going to be opportunities for me - and it's about how I take those opportunities when they are given to me."

Tomorrow's match at Nottingham presents Miller with an ideal chance to state his case for further inclusion.

But with Bristol boasting one of the strongest and deepest back rows in the Championship, the former Bath Academy player is taking nothing for granted.

James Phillips, Iain Grieve and Dan Montagu could all consider themselves first-choice picks, while Redford Pennycook and the fit- again James Merriman have also played a big part this season.

"It's very competitive here and that's a good thing," said Miller.

"I don't think it's healthy to be in a team where you walk into your shirt every week - that's not a good way to go about improving as a player.

"It is a very competitive position and there are some fantastic back-row players here - so when you get the opportunity to wear that shirt, there's a lot of pressure on you to keep it."

Miller believes Bristol are on their way to the Guinness Premiership - and despite only having a short-term contract with the club, he wants to be involved if and when they get there.

rolex replica "I've got a short-term deal here and all the emphasis is on me to perform and impress at this level and show people I'm worth a place," he said.

"When I get given opportunities, I've obviously got to take them, and hopefully play my way into a longer contract here.

"It did take a little bit of time to learn all the calls and everything - and I'm still getting my head around certain aspects of it now.

"But I'd say on the whole I've pretty much got to grips with it now.

"Bristol are striving to be in the Premiership - where they belong - and one way to do that is to be professional and do everything the right way.

"And tha

Miller says title is now well

KENNY MILLER today admitted Rangers' last-gasp defeat of Old Firm rivals Celtic represented "a huge step" in their quest to retain the SPL title.

The Light Blues lead the Parkhead men by 10 points and have a game in hand after Maurice Edu's injury-time goal gave them a 1-0 victory at Ibrox.

Rangers need to win eight of their 12 remaining matches to win back-to-back titles, and that's postcard printing assuming Celtic win all of their 11 games.

Miller said: "We've fought until the end and taken a huge step to retaining the title. It's in our hands and has been for long time.

"It was an opportunity for them to beat us and pull the gap back to four points.

"But we've increased the lead and we're delighted."

Celtic skipper Scott Brown was shown a straight red card by referee Dougie McDonald in 65 minutes after wrestling with Gers' Kyle Lafferty.

After having plugged away until the dying embers of the match, Rangers finally made their numerical advantage count.

"Against 10 men, we thought we could get a winner but you've got to fight until the 93rd or 94th minute," added Miller.

"It's a great time to score - it's always going to be hard to come back after that."

Goal hero Edu, meantime, is hoping his dramatic Old Firm winner will act as the catalyst which allows him to kick-start his season.

The midfielder spent the first half of the campaign recovering from an injury picked up on the day Rangers won the league at Tannadice in May.

He has played just a handful of games so far this term.

With the World Cup finals this summer, the American is desperate to force his way into the reckoning.

"I've had a rough season with all the injuries. It's been stop- start," said Edu.

"When I come into the team, I'm just trying to get as many minutes as possible and try to get back to top form.

"To score a goal in a game like this, and for it to be the winner, is a great catalog printing feeling.

"I'm going to use it as the extra push to try and stay in the side."

Describing the moment he stabbed the ball over the line as Ibrox erupted, he added: "It was just pure excitement.

"I had a goal called back earlier and was disappointed about that.

"But the boys fought well and created a couple of chances.

"To score the winning goal in an Old Firm match is just an unbelievable feeling. It went exactly the way we wanted it to."

Celtic boss Tony Mowbray admitted that the Omega Replica Watches title is now Rangers' to throw away.

However, as far as Edu is concerned, it is still too early to hail his goal as the moment Rangers ensured the silverware would be remaining at Ibrox.

"There are still a lot of games," he said. "This was a massive game for us and a massive three points. It was a big step towards retaining the title.

"We are going to take the season as it comes, every game one by one, and try to finish the season strongly.

"Our fate is in our hands.

Beyond the statistics of cance

RICHARD NIXON declared War on Cancer in his 1971 State of the Union. Barack Obama devoted one sentence to our investment in promising, innovative research in cancer. He mentioned the potential solar treatment that can kill cancer cells while leaving healthy cells untouched.

Nixon may have employed a metaphor of "overkill" in fighting a terrible disease, but Obama slighted the subject, despite earlier statements about wanting "a cure for cancer in our time."

Fortunately, the rates of new diagnoses and rates replica rolex of death from all cancers combined have declined significantly in the past decade for men and women and for racial and ethnic populations in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute. No small thing. But if you document the emotional fears over cancer articulated in personal experiences that scientists call "anecdotal evidence," the incidence of cancer seems incredibly high.

I know five people who in the last year (starting at the age of 40) have been diagnosed with different kinds of cancer, including breast, pancreatic, lymphoma and prostate, all of whom are getting treatment that offers hope they will live long lives. But anxiety reigns over their lives and confusion plagues the rest of us who try to separate scientific evidence from popular suggestions.

The media don't always help. The November guidelines for mammograms as a preventive detection for breast cancer got embroiled in the confusion and economics of the health care debate and still require some light. When the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force advised that women Cartier Replica Watches over 50 should get a mammogram every two years instead of annually as had been previously prescribed, a hue and cry went up blaming "bureaucrats" for cutting costs at the price of harming women.

That's too bad because the advice was not issued by experts who personally or collectively had a vested economic interest in their advice, and the suggestions had nothing to do with Congress or the Obamacare debate. The task force, appointed by the government to make interpretations and recommendations, is without policymaking abilities (although some insurance companies base their policy on the interpretations).

The report should instead provoke informed discussion over facts, trade-offs and the impact of having annual mammograms along with a consideration for the increased numbers of false positives that often lead to further imaging tests and pointless exposure to additional radiation.

"Our entire breast oncology group got together and decided that the findings of the task force should serve as a starting point for a debate about the limitations of screening, but definitely not as a justification for women to delay or forgo their mammography," says Dr. Lisa Jacobs, assistant professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins, in its Hospital Medical Letter.

Like any disease, money in the pocketbook, literally, affects treatment, prevention and exploitation. Women, perhaps more than men, become prey for expensive gimmicks playing as they do into the vanity issue. Expensive spas that offer pampering along with "alternative" treatments may make some women feel better by simply giving them the illusion of treatment, but do nothing to reduce the spread of cancer.

Celebrity cancer patients have heightened our awareness about different kinds of approaches to cancer, but they also heighten the emotions and distort unscientific results. Suzanne Somers, for example, who writes Omega Replica Watches with advice for others based on her per
