And, to be honest, it was all quite moving.

"I really feel a bit blessed that I have come on this journey," she said at one point - that was good, because us licence-payers like the recipients of such freebies to be grateful.

So, thanks to her humility, she passed the test - go on, BBC, give her another trip.

YOUR article last week on the large tree behind Gloucester's Greyfriars project just doesn't add up (Citizen, February 11).

Surely they were fully aware of the tree before they started negotiations? I believe that a tree of that size and nature must be subject to a tree preservation order from the council.

Compare this with your article last month, where a man was fined many thousands of pounds plus expenses for cutting back a tree for his father.

This was because the tree had a preservation order on it.

He wasn't offered the alternative of planting a smaller tree elsewhere.

Surprises keep investors guess

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Investors may wish they had a crystal ball.

Stocks have been in flux over the past few weeks as surprises kept coming from overseas. Greece's debt crisis, similar troubles in Portugal, and China's latest moves to slow down its economy have kept investors guessing.

At least the news is becoming less shocking. The Dow Jones industrial average recovered most of its losses Friday to end down 45 points following China's decision to force its banks to boost their reserves again. The Dow managed a weekly gain of about 1 percent - its first after four weeks of losses.

It's been a tough start to the year, and many traders are keenly interested in recouping some of the losses they've suffered since the beginning of 2010. The Dow has fallen 3.2 percent so far this year, and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index is down 3.6 percent.

Human hair wigs

Greece's debt problems threatened to destabilize Europe's shared currency, the euro. Meanwhile China, which many people thought was done applying the brakes to its economy, moved again to keep growth under control by curbing bank lending. These and other global factors could easily have ripple effects on the U.S. economy.

"Most people don't really know what news is going to impact them, so all news must devastate them," said Ken Grant, a partner at Waterstone Private Wealth Management in Tulsa, Okla. "What could happen next? Who knows."

Global news has been a big driver of U.S. stocks even during earnings season, when news about U.S. companies usually dictates the market's direction.

The latest surprise from abroad came on Friday, when Chinese regulators said they moved for the second time in a month to boost reserve levels at banks. Chinese leaders are worried that their economy is overheating and want to prevent speculative bubbles before it's too late.

That's fine for China, but some investors also worry that a slowdown could disrupt a U.S. recovery by hurting exports and profits of companies that do business there. China's previous move to cut back bank lending a month ago spooked the market and helped start the recent slide.

"If the robust recovery in China were to stagnate or burst as a bubble, the global economy would be impacted," Grant said.

Elsewhere, concerns about debt problems in European countries like Greece, Spain and Portugal have also weighed on the market and increased volatility in recent weeks. European Union leaders pledged last week to provide Greece tag heuer replica with support as it tries to bring its debt problems under control.

However, no details were provided after the initial pledge, and an update is expected this week. That could influence markets and also set a template if other European countries need similar support.

"With everything going on, we have to remember we're all in this together," said Beth Larson, principal of Evermay Wealth Management in Washington, D.C. "We are in a global economy these days."

While it may be difficult to forecast the next big hit that could send markets plummeting or skyrocketing, investors must not forget ongoing struggles here in the U.S.

Consider: The nation's jobless rate remains high at 9.7 percent. Also, a recent report on consumer sentiment was poor.

And while a report Friday showed modestly better-than-expected retail sales fo

Survey shows 20 pct of workers will not return to S.China's Dongguan

BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- More than 20 percent of migrant workers in Dongguan, a major manufacturing hub in Guangdong province, will not return to work after the upcoming Spring Festival, according to a new survey.

"Unsound employment conditions, including a common practice of Lace front wigs delayed payments" are some of the major reasons while 21 percent of the migrant workers polled don't want to return to Dongguan, once regarded as one of the world's largest manufacturing bases, Tuesday's China Daily quoted a survey conducted by the Guangzhou- based Southern Metropolis Daily as saying.

About 95 migrant workers, aged between 18 and 40, most of them from provinces of Sichuan, Hunan and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, were interviewed for the survey conducted early this month.

Up to 90 percent of the workers hoped their salaries would increase after the Chinese New Year, which falls on Sunday.

"I seldom send money to my parents. It is hard for me to afford such high living expenses in Dongguan," said a migrant worker surnamed Huang.

Yang Fushou, a member of the Dongguan political consultative conference, has urged the local government to increase the minimum salary of the workers from 770 yuan to 1,000 yuan per month.

"They left their homes to make a better living here. We have to respect their needs," Yang said.

Yang, who is also the general manager of a Dongguan-based factory manufacturing children's products, said he found it difficult to hire qualified workers last year even though his company had doubled tag heuer replica salaries.

"A worker told me he was once robbed on a street shortly after he got his salary. But the police did not help him," he said.

The government and local companies should offer more care to migrant workers, he said.

"For example, the government should give workers' children equal rights as the locals when it comes to education,"Yang said.

Zheng Xiaoqiong, a migrant worker deputy to the Guangdong provincial legislature, attributed the shortage of migrant workers to "worsened working and living conditions" in the Pearl River Delta region.

Many of Zheng's friends have left for the Yangtze River Delta region in search of a better working and living environment.

Li Huiqin, Party secretary of Houjie township of Dongguan, said that the government would organize a series of job fairs in provinces and regions that export labor service this year, to help local companies find more workers.
